Pets There are good reasons to have a pet, and research has shown the more time you spend caring for them, the healthier you are mentally and emotionally. But, as any pet owner can tell you, it is hard to eliminate airborne odours caused by your pets, and there are the occasional ‘accidents’ where the smell can linger in the air. Allergens from pets, particularly dogs and cats, can often be found in houses that do not have pets, as airborne particles can travel on clothes as well as in the wind. Allergen sources can be derived from animal dander (dead skin cells), saliva, faeces and urine. Allergen in pet saliva is transferred to the fur in grooming. The salvia then dries, detaches from the fur and commonly becomes airborne with the particle it is attached to. As with dust mites, allergens build up in carpets, furnishings and beddings. Symptoms can include scratching and itchy, red eyes to more serious respiratory problems. Often mistaken for dust, pet and human dander (or dead skin cells) makes up around 80% of dust. And like dust, even though we can sometimes see it, there is an awful lot that we can’t, and this is what is difficult to get rid of.
